Centre tells Supreme Court that ‘some action’ will be taken for regulation of OTT platforms : Bollywood News

The Center told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it was considering taking some action on the issue of regulating OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. A petitioner approached the court seeking OTT regulation by an autonomous body. A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian initially stated that the petitioner should approach the government for a remedy but later asked the government to file a reply within six weeks.

Allegedly, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain said that the Center was considering some action on the issue of regulating OTT platforms. The CJI tried to get Jain to know what the action would be and asked him to file the reply in six weeks, tagging the case with the pending petition.

The petition by advocates Shashank Shekhar Jha and Apoorva Arhatia stated that theaters are unlikely to open soon in the country, with OTT / Streaming and various digital media platforms certainly releasing their content without worrying filmmakers and artists. Has given a way of About obtaining clearance certificate for their films and series from the censor board.

Currently, however, there is no law or autonomous body governing digital content to monitor and manage these digital materials and is made available to the public at large without any filtering or screening. The lack of legislation governing OTT / streaming platforms is becoming evident with each passing day and every new case being filed on these grounds. The government is facing heat to fill this lac by the rules of the public and the judiciary; Still the concerned government departments have not done anything significant to regularize these OTT / streaming platforms, the petition further said.

The petition also claimed that a streaming platform has signed self regulation provided by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting since February 2020.
