Exploring the complex relationship between a professor and his students, Sir Sir Sarla of Makarand Deshpande is originally a stage performance and will premiere at Zee Theater on Tata Sky. Deshpande, who also acts as director of the long-running play, is confident that the development will bring the story to a wider audience.
“By presenting the play on a new platform, we can reach more consumers. We have been performing with Sir Sir Sarla since 2001, and in both Marathi and Gujarati,” said the director, alongside Aahana Kumra, Sanjay Dadhich and Anjum Sharma.
Deshpande has collaborated with several actors in performing the play on various occasions, Deshpande says that the changing dynamics between actors often makes each edition more enjoyable. “Initially Sonali Kulkarni played Sarla, Rajendra Gupta played Palekar sir, and Anurag Kashyap played Phanidhar. I remember we needed Anurag to look angry in one scene. At the time, one of his movies was stuck on the censor board. I asked. him about bringing out that anger for the scene, and the magic he created onstage was the result of that. His connection to Sonali’s character was so impressive that people cried while watching. When his movie crashed, he took part in the play. Now, this new fate brings their own personalities to the characters. “
Delighted that the development implies that the show will reach those viewers who will fear going to the cinema after the pandemic, Kumra says: “Maybe after the pandemic we will meet again, hug and watch the play in theaters. , and crying and laughing together. There are many facets of Sarla that stay with me, as I’ve been investing in the character for a while. “
