David Dhawan is credited as the king of spice films. His films are aimed at audiences who crave for entertainment. However, this time, Dhawan Sr is competing with himself. 25 years ago, in 1995, he helmed a film starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor – not just for his humor, lyrics and drama, but for everything he loved. This is a film that is still fresh in our minds. This is Dhawan Sr.’s updated version of COOLIE NO. 1 [1995], Which in turn, was a remake of the Tamil film CHINNA MAPILLAI [1993]. The Dhawan scene retains the essence of Hindi origins – including some chartbusters – but is sprinkled with some fresh punches to suit the current times.

Like most Dhawan scene movies, COOLIE NO. 1 is a cheerful one who suffers from many humiliating situations. More of a fun-fest aimed at pleasing the hardcore public. The punches may sound blunt, but what works is the chemistry between Varun and Paresh that is the main reason why the proceedings work for the most part.

COOLIE NO.1 QUIZ- Varun Dhawan vs Sara Ali Khan – PAISA VASOOL fight Govinda David Dhawan

Dhawan Sr is in a familiar area, so not much is in the attempt to fix it. The writing is unique. Also, funny one-liners make sure you have a constant smile on your face. The soundtrack is energetic and the idea is to retain the original songs of the 1995 film [‘Mirchi Lagi To’, ‘Husn Hain Suhana’] Is a master stroke, as these are timeless tunes.

Varun is easily seen in the character. The role demands that he play in the gallery and follow the actor dictate. The act can be loud and at times, he can avoid limitations, but it works well in a film of this genre. Paresh Rawal is being matched by Varun, which is an absolute pleasure to watch. In fact, the comic timing of the two actors is superb.

Sara Ali Khan has limited scope to prove her credibility. He is decent. Ditto for Shikha Talsania. Supporting characters – Sahil Vaid, Johnny Lever, Javed Jaffrey, Rajpal Yadav and Manoj Joshi – fit their parts brilliantly.

Overall, COOLIE NO. 1 is a typical David Dhawan entertainer – crazy, outrageous and over the top – but funny and entertaining. Sit back and enjoy this ride!
