Sky is Pink Review 2.5 / 5: The Priyanka Chopra

The death of a young child can be one of the most painful experiences for any parent. Director Shonali Bose, who suffered a similar loss in her life, is now back with The SKY IS PINK, based on the life of a motivational speaker, Ayesha Chaudhary, who died at the age of 19. The film’s team promises as it focuses on celebrating the life of the dead man rather than him or her being unhappy. So does SKY PINK emerge as a touching and uplifting film? Or does it fail to strike a raga with the audience? Let us analyze.

SKY IS PINK is the story of a family facing a crisis over a period of almost two decades. Naren Chaudhary (Farhan Akhtar) from Chandni Chowk marries South Delhi girl Aditi Chaudhary (Priyanka Chopra) and her childhood love in 1986. He has a son Ishaan (Rohit Saraf) a few years later. Aditi also gives birth to a daughter, Tanya, but she passes away in 6 months. This is because both Aditi and Naren have a rare defective gene. They again try for a child and on 27 March 1996 Aisha (Zaira Wasim) is born. The sad thing is that like Tanya, Ayesha also gets affected due to her parents’ rare defective genes and develops a condition called Severe Crunch Combined Immunity Deficiency (SCID). They move to London to treat her and even manage to double the money required for her treatment. At 6 months of age, Aisha receives a bone narrowing transplant but as a side effect of this treatment, he develops a serious lung disease called lung fibrosis. This situation comes to the fore when Aisha is 13 years old, when Chaudhary was hoping that all her problems were history and she would lead a normal life. In addition, doctors make it clear that she will not live for more than 5 years. What happens next makes the rest of the film.

The story of Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar is very promising and could become the most poignant film of the year. The screenplay by Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar only works in parts. Some scenes are exceptional but in some scenes, the writing does not have the desired effect. The film continuously goes into various flashback modes and it can be difficult to keep track of the same. The dialogues of Juhi Chaturvedi and Nilesh Maniyar are fine. Some one-liners work well and are funny. But some dialogues misfire, especially Aisha’s narrations written by Nisha. Humor in the dialogues seems forced, especially the constant hammer on Aditi and Naren’s sex life.

Shonali Bose’s instructions are strictly fine. She had a great subject in her hand but fails to do full justice. The film gets too long at 149 minutes and should have been shorter. At the same time, some details are omitted and ideally should be focused, at least briefly. Aisha was an inspirational speaker but this bit is only touched for a few seconds. In one scene, Ishaan also says that Aditi’s video did an amazing job on the internet. The audience would love to see what Aisha speaks as a motivational speaker, given that she has a great sense of humor. Likewise, Naren is revealed for a band and surprises the audience as the part is never even mentioned until pre-climax. Shonali tried to make the situation lighter so that the film would not be too heavy. Therefore, he adds humor and in an important tragic scene, a strange background score is played and it fails to fully influence the decision. On the positive side, she handles some scenes with Elaine. One of the most beautiful aspects in the film is the bonding of Ayesha with her brother Ishaan. It will be unanimously loved.

SKY IS PINK started in the year 2015. The sad faces of Aditi and Naren indicate that things are not right between them. The story then goes on to flashback mode and the audience engages as Aisha is conceived and her treatment takes her to London. Some scenes stand out here as Naren suspects that Ishaan is not his son, Aditi blasts Naren for helping a woman named Sonia and Naren surprise Aditi in London by visiting Has been However, a lot is happening back and forth as the film jumps into the deadline. Emotional touch is also missing in the first half. In the second part, some scenes move a lot and create effects. But on the flipside, long lengths play a game of loot among other factors. The theme, treatment, content and even the title are such that it will appeal only to select urban audiences.

Priyanka Chopra gives an excellent performance and carries much of the film on her strong, capable shoulders. She has a very difficult part to essay but she succeeds effortlessly. Zaira Wasim performs a trustworthy act. The story is about her but the parts of her childhood dominate most in the first half. As a result, she takes a very late entry, although her voiceover follows from the very first scene. He is suffering from an incurable disease as a happy-go-lucky person. Farhan Akhtar has a restrained performance and he gives his best shot. Sadly, they get a raw deal due to Priyanka and Zaira being more focused. Rohit Saraf is seen twitching and flashing in some important scenes in the second half. Gurpal Singh (RJ Arjun Gill) performs heartily. Rajshree Deshpande (Anita Tandon), who made an impact with SACRED GAMES, vanished in a blink of an eye throughout the film. Ishan Jatshi (Karan; Ayesha’s crush) is decent. Sudhavan Deshpande (Dr. Nirvik), Pooja Sarup (Mohini), Sunil Chitkara (Naren’s father) and Nirupama Varma (Naren’s mother) are passable.

Pritam’s music is average. ‘Dil Hi Toh Hai’ Very nice and very well shot. ‘Nadaaniyaan’ And ‘life’ Are not very memorable. ‘Pink pink sky’ Is played in the end credits. Mickey McCleary’s background score is a bit dramatic and only works in a few scenes.

The cinematography of Karthik Vijay and Nick Cook is appropriate. The locations of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are well occupied. Aradhana Seth’s production design is realistic and yet engaging. Ika Lakhani’s costumes are straight out of life and not over the top. Manas Mittal’s editing could have been difficult.

Overall, The SKY IS PINK has a great plot, but stutters due to a flawed execution and long run. At the box office, it will only appeal to a thin section of niche audiences in select metros.
