Ziyada Sawan, the Shambhal language of Ayushman Khurana, is a good effort and makes an interesting commentary on the homophobia that exists in our country.

In the last three decades, Bollywood has brought quite a few films on homosexuality like FIRE [1996], My brother Nikhil [2005], EK LADKI KO DEKHA TO AISA LAGA [2019], ALIGARH [2016], With Margaret A. Strauss [2015] Unlike Adi Anand L Rai and T-Series now bringing SHANGH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN and other gay-themed films, it is a lighthearted one and looks quite commercial. Apart from this, it also has Ayushmann Khurrana, who has become a brand in itself. So does SHANGH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN manage entertainment? Will it succeed in becoming Bollywood’s first legitimate LGBT-themed hit film? Or does it fail to succeed? Let us analyze.

SHUBH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN, is the story of two men in the Section 377 era. Aman Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) is the son of Shankar Tripathi (Gajraj Rao) and Sunaina (Neena Gupta), who are based in Allahabad. Aman works in Delhi and is unaware of his family, he is a homosexual and living with Karthik (Ayushmann Khurrana). Jitendra’s cousin Gogal (Manvi Gagru) is getting married and Nina asks Aman to come back to attend her wedding. Aman refuses at first but then goes inside. Karthik also joins him and they meet the entire Tripathi family in a special wedding train called the Vivah Express. In the train, Aman and Karthik kiss when they believe that no one is looking. It is sad for him that Shankar sees him and he gets the shock of his life. He never tells anyone about it out of shame. Gawana’s wedding, Aman, in front of everyone, Karthik, thus makes the Tripathi family kiss amazingly. Thanks to this development, Gogal’s husband refuses to marry. Angry, Goggle runs away. Karthik is asked to leave and Shankar’s brother and Gogal’s father Chaman (Manurishi Chaddha) leaves him to leave Allahabad station. At the railway station, Karthik jumps into Goggle and stops him from ending his life. She tells Karthik that he should not run away and should fight for his love. This inspires Karthik and he decides not to return to victory over Jeetendra but the entire Tripathi family. What happens next makes the rest of the film.

Hitesh Kewale’s story is decent and has the potential to be a game-changer. Hitesh Kewale’s script is a major culprit though. He also resorts to many hard-to-digest situations, under the guise of making situations funny. It was also popular as SHANGH MANGAL SAAVDHAN, but there they kept a good balance. Here, the balance is not yet there. The first half is still decent. But in the second half, it all gets harder. Hitesh Kewale’s dialogues are funny but some of them are just over the top. It would not be wrong to say that even one-liners, considered funny, take realism away from the film.

Hitesh Kewale’s direction is weak. The film has a lot of subplots but they did not put it together well. A major part of the film is about rifts within the family and at such times, the principle homosexuality angle takes a backseat. Also, they should have been fully successful in two aspects – comedy and messaging. Sadly in both these areas she does not do justice. Even the black cauliflower angles that provide laughter initially proved to be the film’s biggest downfall at the climax. This gave a bad view of the ‘black monkey’ angle of DELHI-6 [2009]. On the positive side, he handles a few scenes with Elaine and some scenes really add laughter.

SHUBH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN debuted on a funny note and the black cabbage groove looks swell. The scene of Devika (Bhumi Pednekar) is also funny. The scene where Shankar Tripathi catches the lovers kiss brings the house down. Like Aman kissing Karthik in full public view and talking to his parents about Aman dopamine and other such ingredients to keep the curtain going for interest. Post lag however, the film drops. The scenes are supposed to be funny, but don’t make you laugh. Also it becomes very didactic and unrelated. The producers try their best to make things interesting but it does not work.

Shocking Ayushmann Khurrana is not in his normal form. He has always played the role of a victim but here, he plays the role of the instigator and an actor of his caliber should have hit the ball outside the park. Surprised, he turned back. Another major setback is that their screen time is very limited. Believe it or not, Gajraj Rao has the maximum screen time followed by Jitendra and then comes Ayushmann! Gajraj Rao, however, is very good as usual and performs script-wise. Jitendra Kumar gives the role to T and some of his scenes in the first half are excellent. Neena Gupta is an average. Manurishi Chadha and Sunita Rajwar (Champa) judge their share. Pankhudi Awasthi (Kusum) is quite funny. Manvi Gagaru said with some laughs. Neeraj Singh (Keshav) is decent. Bhumi Pednekar is inactive while Gopal Dutt (the doctor on the train) is fine.

The music is functional and gels with the film. ‘Pyaar tenu karda gabaru’ Is best after ‘Arey Pyaar Kar Le’, Which is played in the end credits. ‘Ooh La La’ While comes to a great point ‘Mere Liye Tum Kaafi Ho’ It is forgetful. Redesigned version of ‘Kya Karte The Saajna’ Looks great but not used well. Karan Kulkarni’s background score adds to the strangeness of the film.

Chiramantan Das’s cinematography is appropriate. Ravi Srivastava’s production design suits the film’s setting. Ankita Jha’s costumes are realistic and special mention should go to Ayushmann’s look. There are complaints in editing of Ninad Khanolkar.

Overall, SHANGH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN is a decent effort and makes an interesting comment on the homophobia that exists in our country. At the box office, it has a chance to work with urban audiences, especially youth. However, it will be a challenge to bring the family audience and the audience to small towns and cities. The presence of Ayushman Khurana can boost its collection.
