Mumbai : Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Saturday evening said he would file a defamation suit against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh alleging corruption.
NCP leader Deshmukh Singh had earlier tweeted refuting the allegations, asking police officers to collect money from bars, restaurants and other establishments.
In a statement, Deshmukh further asked why Singh had remained silent for so long, and alleged that the IPS officer, who resigned as city police commissioner on Wednesday, was only trying to save his own skin in the Sachin Waze case.
“The allegations made by Singh are false and I am filing a defamation suit against him,” Deshmukh said.
Deshmukh said, “Sachin Waz’s involvement in the Mukesh Ambani case and Mansukh Hiran’s death case was established and the tram was delivered to Param Vir Singh. It is because of this possibility that these allegations have been leveled,” Deshmukh said.
On Thursday, a day after the dismissal of Param Vir Singh, Deshmukh said he was transferred after some of his associates made “serious and unworthy mistakes”.
Singh in his letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleged that Deshmukh had told Waje that he intended to collect? ₹One hundred crore rupees per month, half of which is about 1,750 times, from restaurants and similar establishments operated in the city.
Deshmukh said, “If Sachin Waze informed him about this in February, why is Singh still silent? Singh decided to return Sachin Waze after 1 year (after he was suspended in the death case in the custody of Khwaja Yunus),” Deshmukh said.
The minister said, “Sensing problems in the explosives case, Singh has made baseless allegations to blackmail the government. This is a conspiracy by Singh to confuse the investigation into the death of explosives and Mansukh Hiran.”
The chief minister should have ordered an impartial inquiry into Singh’s allegations, he added.
Waje was arrested by the NIA last week on charges of recovering an explosive-laden Scorpio near the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani here last month.
The NIA has also accepted the case related to the mysterious death of Mansukh Hiran, from whose possession the SUV was stolen.
