Forced Urgent The late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was “wrong” but the Congress party did not try to grasp the constitutional framework of India, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.
Rahul Gandhi termed the state of emergency imposed by his grandmother from 19 grand 5 to 1977 as “wrong” and said that what was happening in the country at present was “fundamentally different” from the state of emergency.
“I think (the emergency) was a mistake. Perfectly it was a mistake. And as much as my grandmother (Indira Gandhi) said,” he said.
“There is a fundamental difference between what happened in the emergency, what went wrong and what is happening now. The Congress party in no way tried to capture the constitutional framework of India. Our design does not allow us to do that. Even if we wanted to, we could not. The former president of the party said.
The Congress MP made the remarks in a virtual conversation with renowned economist and professor Kaushik Basu at Cornell University.
Hitting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Gandhi alleged that democracy in India was being suffocated by the systematic infiltration of the RSS into all independent institutions in the country.
The Congress leader said, “The RSS is doing something fundamentally different. They are filling the institutions with their people. Even if we defeat the BJP in the elections, we will not get rid of their people in the institutional structure.”
“Modern democracies work because a country has an institutional balance. Institutions that are run independently. That freedom is being attacked in India. Now there is a big organization called RSS that is infiltrating all Indian institutions. There is no one that is not being attacked and it is systematically. Being done … I would not say that democracy is being eroded, I would say it is being suffocated, “he added.
Asked about his party’s internal democracy, the former Congress chief further said that no party other than the Congress, like the BJP, BSP and Samajwadi Party, questioned its internal elections.
“I am the first person to say that democratic elections within the party are absolutely critical but it is interesting to me that this question has not been asked about any other political party. No one has asked why there is no internal democracy in BJP, BSP and Samajwadi Party,” he said. .
“But they have asked about the Congress because there is a reason for it. We are an ideological party and our ideology is the ideology of the constitution, so it is more important for us to be democratic,” added Rahul Gandhi.
