PC of Article 144 in all the 31 constituencies that took part in the voting in the third phase

On Monday, the Election Commission described West1, one of the West Bengal assembly constituencies, as sensitive, where the third phase of polling would be held on Tuesday, and issued a restraining order under Article 144 of the CR PC, an official said.

Polling stations are spread over Howrah (Part I), Hooghly (Part I) and South 24 Parganas (Part II) districts.

Voting will be held in 10,7711 polling stations in 31 assembly constituencies between 7 am and 30.30 pm.

A total of 786,52,4225 voters from the three districts will decide the fate of 205 candidates in Tuesday’s poll. Prominent among them are BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, TMC minister Ashima Patra and senior CPI (M) leader Kanti Ganguly contesting from Hooghly, Howrah and South 24 Parganas respectively.

“It was decided to impose 14 CRPCs in 16 assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas (Part II), seven in Howrah and the first part in Hooghly (Part 1). All booths in 31 constituencies are considered to be sensitive,” the official said.

The order bans illegal assembly and movement, public rallies, carrying weapons, sticks, banners, placards as well as slogans by anyone and the use of loudspeakers.

“However, the rules do not apply to religious ceremonies, weddings or janazas and gatherings inside polling booths for voting purposes. It prohibits gatherings of five or more people, among other restrictions,” he added.

He added that the EC had asked the authorities of the three districts to execute all the pending arrest warrants by Monday night and take the accused in various cases into custody.

The EC had issued a similar restraining order at the Nandigram assembly constituency, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the candidate and the second round of voting was held on April 2.
