Prime Minister Modi has mourned the death of Digvijay Singh Jala, India’s first environment minister

Former Union Environment Minister and Wankoner MLA from Gujarat Digvijay Singh Jala has died today at the age of 8 after a short illness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over his death.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “The sudden death of former Union Minister, Shri Digvijay Singh Jala Zia. He played an active role in Gujarat and national politics. He will be remembered for his community service and passion for the environment. In the Om family. Om Shanti.”

Jala 19 candidate was MLA as an independent candidate from Wankaner till 1967 and as a member of Swadhinata Party in 1967-61.

He then joined the Congress and became a Member of Parliament from Surendranagar for two terms from 1999 to 1989.

Establishing the Ministry of Environment under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he became the country’s first Environment Minister from 1982 to 1984.

He has represented India at the United Nations more than once in the world, speaking on the environmental issues facing the world.

With the achievement of declaring India a multi-national park for wildlife and nature conservation, he has undertaken several major reforms such as coordinating with Indian Railways to replace wooden slippers under the railways to help protect India’s trees.
