The CBI is investigating Abhishek Banerjee’s brother-in-law in a coal theft case

Calcutta : A CBI team visited the home of Menaka Gambhir, brother-in-law of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, in Kolkata on Monday to investigate him in the coal driver case, officials said.

After giving him a notice on Sunday, two female CBI officers examined Gambhir at his residence near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass for about three hours, they said.

Sources said that the officials of the anti-corruption branch of the CBI tried to determine his financial account.

The sister of Gambhir Abhishek’s wife Rujira Banerjee, who had earlier told the CBI that she would be present at her residence on Harish Mukherjee Road between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Trinamool Congress Diamond Harbor MP Abhishek is nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In November last year, the CBI had indicted Kingpin Manji alias Lala, the general manager of Eastern Coalfields Ltd., Amit Kumar Dhar (then Pandeshwar region of Kunustoria region) and Joyesh Chandra Roy (Kazora region), besides ECL. Security Forces Tanmoy Das, Area Security Inspector, Kunustoria Dhananjay Rai and SSI and Security Incharge Kazor Area Debashish Mukherjee.

According to sources, the accused Lala has been accused of illegal mining and theft of coal from ECL’s Ijarakhand mine in Kunustoria and Kajora areas.
